I folded this origami ornament out of a used Florence, Italy
city map. The map covers notable Florentine sites such as Piazza
Independencia, Palazzo Pitti, the River Arno, Biblioteca Nazionale
Centrale, and the Fortezza de Basso. The colors and places lend a lot of
personality and texture.
The paper is glossed for durability and
water resistance. If you would like to have the ornament on a wire loop
with ribbon (as in the last picture), please request in the "message to
seller" at checkout.
Product Details:
Size: 3 inch diameter (8 cm)
Origami Model: Brocade
Sheets of Paper: 6
Time: 1 hour
Note
that one map can make THREE ornaments, so the various locations noted
may not be on the ornament you choose. If you have a preference, please
let me know. I have additional copies of the map, so I can make
duplicates easily.
The map's design and distribution courtesy of the apt (agenzia per il turismo).

Netherlands - Upcycled Wood

Dutch Designer makes wood out of Newspaper
The ordinary:
Wood has always been used to make paper, but, with new techniques and ingenuity, paper now becomes wood and utilized in different form in many products. The news paper is used as a raw material. Hard texture is given to these newspapers by recycling them and the recycled newspaper is used for making various products. Newspaper Wood is the unique way of using waste material and creating much exciting and useful products out of it. This process of up cycling is the new way to bring life to old dumped recyclable waste.
Inspiration:
A Dutch designer Mieke Meijer worked on this project in her workshop at Eindhoven, Netherlands. Her work is appreciated by a design firm Vij5 and they used this Newspaper wood in creating furniture pieces. Vij5 helped Mieke Meijer in implementing the vital processes into production and marketing. Her work was unnoticed for a period of four years. It was in Milan Design Week 2011, however, the furniture items of this wood were showcased. This process is time consuming, but the end result produce wood like material which has wood grains or rings of trees in a series of layers. It is the creativity of the designer that has transformed dumped newspaper piles into beautiful creations by a simple process of upcycling. Thus, saving the life of so many trees that can be cut down to make wooden items.
The extraordinary:
The newspaper wood created is eco friendly as it utilized the waste newspaper and is of great value. Special machines are used for compressing newspaper by rolling it very tightly to produce log of the size of tabloid. These tabloid logs are quiet similar to real wood in appearance.
The making:
Mieke Meijer, a graduate from the Design Academy Eindhoven made this concept of newspaper wood popular. Certainly, it’s her ideas and hard work that made it possible to create wood from recycled newspaper. The designer glued the stack of newspaper one by one and rolled it very tightly. The wood obtained is slightly deformed and can be sandpapered. So, the end product is the wood which can be cut or sanded and can be transformed into any product just like wood.

Italian Inspired Upcycle
Upcycled Fashion In Italy
A little update about the use of recycled materials in fashion in Italy.
Maybe not everyone knows that Salvatore Ferragamo, aka “the shoemaker of dreams”, was one of the first designers to use recycled materials for his creations...he noted that candy wrappers were a strong material and braided them to create the upper part of his shoes in the 1940s. Due to the big economic crisis during the second world war, expensive materials were not available or affordable.
And what about today? Italians always prefer quite classic styles and it is hard to market unusual looking products here, in my opinion, if not connected with luxury and properly marketed with expensive campaigns. Here are some examples of high market brands that are surprisingly producing recycled materials collections:
Moma Boma creates bags using vintage newspaper, magazines , measure tapes, and (my favourite) pages from kids school scrapbooks, with maths or other subjects assignments and exercises on.

Momaboma arose from Maurizio Longati's passion who, in 2003, build up to little firm from the idea of creating accessories and objects obtained by recovering waste materials… smelling to bit like nostalgic. Nowadays Momaboma has become to successful firm with 300 dealers in Italy and 100 abroad. Its brand mark is now famous in fashion and design trade.

Italian Upcycle - paper items
Florence Origami Ornament - Italy Map Upcycled
Prima Donna upcycled recycled license plate art sign Italian opera DIVA fleur de lis STAR red blue mounted on barn wood tomboyART OOAK
Originally used in opera or Commedia dell'arte companies,
"prima donna" is Italian for "first lady". The term was used to
designate the leading female singer in the opera company, the person to
whom the prime roles would be given.
Famous opera prima donnas have often caused opera enthusiasts to divide into opposing "clubs" supporting one singer over another. The rivalry between the respective fans of Maria Callas and Renata Tebaldi, for example, was one of the most famous of all opera, despite the friendship of the two singers.
The designation prima donna assoluta (absolute first lady) is occasionally applied to a prima donna of outstanding excellence. This is applied by popular consensus, to those whose achievements place them in a category above all others.
I filled this PRIMA DONNA sign with a lot of STARS and the first letter N in Donna features loads of stars and a music note....very nice.
Mounted on very old scavenged wood that I found in way way way northern Nevada by an old mine. It took me all day with a couple of friends to get to the location high up in the mountains. I'll post a picture of this adventure.
